Why isn't my business showing up on Google?
Every week a business owner tells us some version of the same thing: "I Google my own business and nothing comes up." It's frustrating, and it's costing you the customers who are searching for exactly what you do. The good news is the reasons are predictable, and most are fixable without a huge budget. Here are the five, in the order they usually matter.
1.You don't have a real website (or one Google can't read)
This is the most common one. If your only online presence is a Facebook page or a free auto-generated page, Google has almost nothing to rank. A social page belongs to the platform, not to you, and it rarely shows up when someone searches your service.
The fix: a real website you own, with a page for each service and your town/area named on it.
It doesn't need to be fancy — it needs to load fast, work on a phone, and clearly say what you do and where. That's the first thing we build for clients.
2.Your Google Business Profile isn't claimed or filled out
For local businesses, this is the single highest-leverage free thing you can do. Your Google Business Profile is what puts you in the map results and the "near me" searches.
- Claim it (it's free) and fill out every field — hours, services, service area, photos.
- Get as many reviews as you can, and respond to every one.
The fix: claim the profile, complete it fully, and build reviews. Reviews are a direct local-ranking signal, not just social proof.
3.You're targeting the wrong words
A brand-new website can't out-rank huge competitors for a broad term like "plumber." But it absolutely can rank for the specific, local searches your best customers actually type — things like "emergency water heater repair" plus your city.
The fix: start with the specific, lower-competition searches, win those first, then work up to the bigger terms as Google learns to trust your site.
4.Your site is too slow or not mobile-friendly
Most people find you on their phone. If your site is slow to load or awkward on mobile, Google notices — page speed and mobile experience are real ranking factors, and a slow page also loses the visitor before they ever call.
The fix: a fast, mobile-first site. Speed isn't a nice-to-have; it's part of ranking.
5.You have no content answering what customers ask
Google trusts businesses that clearly know their subject. Pages that answer real customer questions — "how much does this cost," "how does it work," "signs you need this" — do two jobs at once: they rank on Google, and they get your business pulled into AI answers.
The fix: helpful pages that answer the questions your customers ask before they buy. (This guide is an example of one.)
What about AI search? (the part most agencies miss)
More and more people don't scroll Google at all anymore — they ask an AI. They type "who's the best [your trade] near me" into ChatGPT or Google's AI answer box, and the AI names a few businesses. If yours isn't one of them, you're invisible to those customers.
Getting named in AI answers is called GEO — Generative Engine Optimization, and here's the good news: the same helpful, well-structured content that ranks on Google is what AI pulls from. One content engine, both jobs. Very few local businesses are doing this yet, which is exactly why now is the time. We do both — SEO and GEO.
